This conference brought together decision makers from media and civil society organizations in new EU countries, to discuss media coverage of diversity and develop action plans for future work in this area.
Participants attended from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
The conference was a follow up to the European Commission Study on Media & Diversity, which identified initiatives by, or about, the media that countered discrimination and addressed diversity in a responsible way, throughout 30 European countries. The study produced recommendations for policy makers, the media industry and civil society organizations on the EU and national level.
At the conference participants had the opportunity to discuss best practice, look at its applicability in their own countries and develop partnerships with other organizations to implement action plans to address media coverage of diversity. The EC Study on Media & Diversity recommendations was used as a starting point for discussions.
The conference was part of a broader project, ‘A European Dialogue on the EC Study on Media & Diversity’, and was organized by the Media Diversity Institute, London, and the Centre for Independent Journalism, Bucharest, and was funded by the European Commission’s Europe for Citizens Programme, the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, the Council of Europe’s Anti-Discrimination Campaign and the Romanian Government.
More information about this event and the Media Diversity Institute is available here.
